Having an oximeter is key to help detect Covid-19

The health authorities have warned that, despite the arrival of the vaccine, which is expected in the coming days, the most critical stage of the pandemic will be lived in the winter season.

The most critical stage of the pandemic of the Covid-19, for Mexico, will live in the wintertime, has alerted the Ministry of Health, it suggests that the December dates, combined with the winter season, will make positive cases SARS-COV-2 increase in the country.

In that sense, having an oximeter is key to help detect Covid-19, as it is a device that, if it is available and properly used, can alert the appearance of the coronavirus, since this condition can present asymptomatically, which favors the extension of the chain of infections.

What is an oximeter?

Until before the appearance of Covid-19, the pulse oximeter,  as it is known clinically, was a device almost exclusively for use by those with heart rate problems and poor oxygenation, however, since the arrival of Covid- 19 has taken center stage, as this device detects oxygen levels in the blood using infrared light, which means that it is very useful to know who has tested positive for coronavirus.

According to Dr. Tania Zertuche, a specialist in internal medicine, a person with symptoms of Covid-19  can regularly monitor oxygen levels in the body and detect an abnormal result, they can go immediately to the hospital before presenting complications to breathing, as this is one of the most serious signs of the disease, since it has been shown to directly affect the lungs.

One of the advantages of this device is that it is easy to acquire, as it is a device that works simply and is economically accessible.

How does an oximeter work?

The pulse oximeter is a device that has a built-in clamp to fit on the finger or toe. Once in place, the device emits rays that pass through the blood to measure oxygen levels, which appear on the screen after a few seconds. Its use does not cause pain and, in addition, it is capable of measuring the pulse.

As in most cases, it is important to take into account a few points to use it correctly and obtain the most accurate possible results.

In this regard, Dr. Jeffrey O’Tool, medical director of hospital operations at UnityPoint Health-St, explains that the oximeter works better when the nails do not have enamel, as this could interfere with the infrared light used by the device.

What are the normal oxygen levels?

Another important point that must be taken into account is how to read the result, and in this case specialists, such as the epidemiologist Hugo López-Gatell, point out that the values considered acceptable for oxygen in the body range between 95 and 98 percent. hundred. However, this can vary depending on the altitude of the area in which people are, since it has been shown that those who live in coastal areas have between 98 and 99 percent oxygenation in the blood.

Atypically, cases of 100 points can be seen in areas at sea level, however, in very high areas, such as Mexico City, for example, it is common for oxygenation levels to be between 94 and 95 percent.

According to the undersecretary of health in, when the oximeter gives a result from 90 or lower, it is considered abnormal , therefore people should take precaution and go to the doctor, because when the oxygenation levels are very low and, in addition, If you have Covid-19, the situation could be aggravated to such a degree that aggressive interventions are required in the intensive care room.
